Our BRC conducts pioneering scientific and clinical research with the ultimate goal of translating advances in biomedical research into benefits for patients. These studies, which bring together principal investigators, clinicians and industry, aim to collectively shape the future of healthcare and improve patient outcomes.

We are driven by a passion for making tangible improvements to the health of the nation. We were established in 2007 through National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funding as one of the first round of BRCs in England, and received further NIHR funding in 2012 for the period 2012-2017.

Following a competitive application process, the NIHR, in recognition of the outstanding achievements of our BRC in the last ten years, has awarded Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College London £64.4 million over five years from April 2017, to support our BRC. This represents an uplift of 10% on our previous award.

In our current BRC, we aim to:

  • Lead the revolution in advanced therapeutics
  • Address research priority areas
  • Deliver systems leadership for maximum impact

Experimental medicine hub

Within our experimental medicine hub we bring together world class facilities, host a range of ground breaking research groups, and maintain strong links with industry. We are also developing future leaders in translational medicine by creating an environment that provides excellence in training.Graphic of Guy's Hospital, showing the experimental medicines hub and other facilities at the Hospital

MedTech Hub

We contribute to the St Thomas’ MedTech Hub and the London Medical Imaging and AI Centre for Value Based Healthcare. Graphic of St Thomas' Hospital showing the Clinical Research Facilities and other research resources at the Hospital

Research themes

Our research is focused on nine key themes selected on the grounds of scientific and clinical excellence. They cover cardiovascular disease, cutaneous medicine, genomic medicine, infection and immunity, imaging science, transplantation, oral health, regenerative medicine and cellular therapy, and women and children’s health.

Research platforms

The translational research carried out at our BRC is supported by world class facilities. Our research platforms cover immune monitoring, genomics, clinical research, bioinformatics, bioresources and advanced therapeutic manufacturing (good manufacturing practice) unit.

Collaborations

We work closely with a wide range of organisations as we strive to turn research into new ways of treating diseases and conditions. These collaborations provide us with valuable support in our work, while our partners can take advantage of our excellent facilities and expertise.

Equality and diversity

We have worked with our partners King’s College London to ensure that the majority of our research themes have Athena SWAN silver status because we recognise that within science, not all of society is represented.

Generally, there are fewer women in senior positions in the fields of science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM), even when there is gender equity at the undergraduate and early career researcher stages.

We want to create an environment where men and women can fulfil their potential and be supported in their achievements. We want the best researchers to do their best research in the best environment possible.

We’re working to address these imbalances in career development for women and also for the inclusion of all staff working here. We are committed to a culture change, with all levels of the organisation contributing to removing barriers. We are engaging with staff and creating positive changes to benefit everyone. Our plans are part of a national agenda for more diversity in STEMM areas.
