The course is suitable for anyone who analyses medical research data or wishes to better understand why missing data may present challenges.
Researchers in both observational and experimental studies are frequently faced with the problem of incomplete data sets. Data may be missing for different reasons including oversight, data recording error, and/or more often because some participants are unable or unwilling to respond one or more times during the study or drop out of the study prematurely. The main problems researchers face when confronted with missing data is the increase risk of reaching incorrect conclusions (i.e. biased parameter estimates) and loss of information that may substantially reduce statistical power.
The course will provide an introduction to conceptual and practical issues related to the issues of missing data and the choice of strategy for handling missing data. The course will illustrate the shortcomings of ad-hoc procedures for dealing with missing data and identify where multiple imputation might be appropriate. The focus of the course will be on the practical use of modern (i.e. multiple imputation) missing data procedures.
This course will include the following:
- To appreciate the implications of missing data for research
- To understand the different types of missing data and existing approaches to deal with missing data
- To recognize the key assumptions required for analysing missing data and appreciate the role of sensitivity analysis.
