Delivering a step change to research priority areas
In this BRC we have consolidated and expanded our research activity into nine themes, all of which are reflective of NIHR defined priority areas. Each one of these themes holds an individual Athena Swan Silver award highlighting our commitment to equality and diversity, and is underpinned by a critical mass of key translational researchers, and a track record of attracting grant income additional to NIHR investment.
All our research themes are supported by and operate through our inter-disciplinary cluster based structure which has been critical to the delivery of the step change that we have delivered to date.
Cluster 1: Advanced Therapeutics and Experimental Medicine
By delivering advanced therapeutics and experimental medicine we have been extremely successful in many areas including treating children with severe blistering disease (EB) with genetically modified fibroblasts transforming their symptoms and disease course. Cluster 2: Precision Medicine
Supporting precision medicine, Cluster 2 includes our NIHR Bioresource. Through the work of Cluster 2, we have recently described a PCR diagnostic for minimal residual disease in leukaemia transforming the management of this disease. (http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc1603847)
Cluster 3: Data Analytics
Data science underpins all of our science and is delivered through Cluster 3; and includes our Translational Bioinformatics platform, which links to key national data programmes such as the 100,000 genome project and the NIHR Heath Informatics Collaborative
Cluster 4: School of Translational and Experimental Medicine
Only the second of its kind in the world, our School of Translational and Experimental Medicine works to develop the greatest translational research minds in the world; and our 1 year clinical training fellowships have been so successful that it has been adopted as the national template for shared fellowships with the CRICK Institute.
Cluster 5: Operational Infrastructure
This cluster incorporates the world class infrastructure which supports the operational activity of our BRC. This includes the only facility in the world with an embedded GMP advanced manufacturing centre, a cutting edge immune monitoring and flow cytometry facility, our CRF facilities and research platforms as well as our trial management services.
